Sumner Library

The Sumner Library, a Carnegie-funded library, opened in 1915. It is named for Charles Sumner, a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and an outspoken abolitionist. The library has received historic designation from the City of Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A recent facilities project in 2024 added modern features while keeping the historic qualities of a Carnegie library.

Brooklyn Park Library

The Brooklyn Park Library was built in 2016, and the 33,000 square foot facility provides many spaces and services, such as multiple meeting rooms, interactive children’s play area, and a STEAM focused teen room. More than twice the size of the former building, the interior of the library has an open, modern design that allows it to adapt to community needs.

Minneapolis Central Library

The current location of the Minneapolis Central Library opened in 2006 and houses the largest collection of items in the Hennepin County Library system, along with the Cargill Gallery, a library-based gallery space committed to community-engaged group exhibits, the Teen Tech Center, special collections, an auditorium, and several meeting rooms. With over 600,000 visitors per year, the Minneapolis Central Library is an integral part of downtown Minneapolis.
