My Portland

My favorite Portland neighborhood:
Downtown

Eat food, take pictures, and visit stores.

I'm Mexican-American, transplanted from Arizona thirty-eight years ago. I love food, especially tacos, steaks, and potatoes. I enjoy watching old shows like Beverly Hills Hillbillies, Little House on the Prairie, and newer shows like 1883, Lost in Space, and Marvel and DC shows.

How to get there from the Oregon Convention Center:

Downtown is located just southwest of the Convention Center, over any of our bridges. Light rail or bus are quick and easy rides and can take about 10 minutes to get somewhere of interest. If you drive, it can take 5 to 10 minutes to find your targeted location, and there are plenty of parking garages. There is street parking but can at times it can be difficult to find. You could, if it's not raining, use the Nike Biketown bikes, or the electric scooters, that are easy to find near the Convention Center and all around downtown Portland.

My favorite place to eat:

If you love burgers like I love burgers, try Portland Burger (304 SW 2nd Ave., Portland). It is one of my favorite burger joints! It's a fun environment, the staff are nice and treat you well. I haven't had any food there that I didn't like! Try their Angry Jalapeno burger, while enjoying some cool graffiti art that covers the inside walls. And they serve a delicious piña colada smoothie too. They're open every day from 11:00 AM–8:00 PM.

My favorite place to drink (coffee, juice, alcohol, etc.):

Little River Café (315 S Montgomery St., Portland). They serve more than just coffee, but the view is what really gets me. It's along the Willamette River and there are several shops and restaurants along the boardwalk. It's open from 8:00 AM–2:00 PM during the week, and 8:00 AM–4:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. I also enjoy Case Study Coffee Rosters (802 SW10th Ave., Portland), located right across from our Central Library, and if you're into having a robot prepare and serve your coffee, Artly Coffee located inside of MUJI Portland (621 SW 5th Ave., Portland) is the place to check out. It's about a 10-minute light rail ride from the Convention Center.

My favorite place to shop:

MUJI Portland (621 SW 5th Ave., Portland). It carries a variety of items, from clothes to dinnerware, featuring a minimal design aesthetic. I also enjoy shopping at Pioneer Place Mall (700 SW 5th Ave., Portland), it has dozens of stores.

My favorite place to explore:

Pearl District or NW 23rd (also known as Nob Hill). Lots of unique, artsy boutiques to be found in this neighborhood.

My favorite place to escape:

Powell's City of Books (1005 W Burnside St., Portland) and Blick Art Supplies (1115 NW Glisan St, Portland). It's nice to not be in a hurry, look at new things, consider something different, and not be rushed by salespeople, or a quick-ending lunch hour.

Advice from a local:

It is important to be safe in downtown, just be aware of your surroundings. People live, work, and party there so it is safe, but a little awareness never hurt anyone!
